In 2000, our founder Kim Hanchette, MEd, CDE a certified diabetes educator recognized a great need for professional diabetes self-management assistance for people living outside the large metropolitan areas of North Carolina. With a dedicated board of people living with diabetes themselves, Diabetes Management Solutions was born. DMS received their IRS 501c3 nonprofit status in 2001 to address the need for diabetes education where people live and work in North Carolina.
The Diabetes Bus Initiative was our first initiative. A mobile unit, The Diabetes Bus, and a certified diabetes educator brought diabetes management classes to underserved communities in Eastern and Piedmont NC through physician referrals. From 2001-2014, programs were offered in hospitals, physician parking lots, and wellness centers from Ahoskie to Elizabethtown and Sanford to Wilmington. During those years, over 11,000 people with diabetes received free diabetes self-management education not unavailable in their community. 601 NC physicians referred their patients to our program over those years. The people that received diabetes education from our program showed significant health outcomes. As a result, our founder and organization was honored to have received many awards and recognition over the years. The hospitals and communities we served through 2014 were unable to sustain this initiative due to the very challenging healthcare reimbursement environment that rural hospitals find themselves facing. We continue to offer free diabetes education to individuals upon request and with physician referral.
Living Well with Diabetes is our employer wellness initiative that began with a pilot project with Wake County Government in 2011. The goal of positively impacting diabetes and pre-diabetes populations found within large companies and governments. This unique onsite model of diabetes education and coaching has a proven track record of creating healthcare cost savings, improving diabetes outcomes and fostering participant satisfaction.

We taught on The Diabetes Bus, at physician office parking lots and health clinics from 2001- 2009. After that time, we were given space at hospital and physician office locations.
Our Philosophy: Wherever our Certified Diabetes Educators have taught, we have been guided by our basic belief that people want to manage their diabetes and live healthfully but are so often not given the tools with which to do it successfully. We offer a professional, empathetic, and supportive approach with people. Our goal is to instill confidence in their ability to self manage; that armed with the most recent diabetes information and tools, they can live WELL with diabetes.
CDE's- A Certified Diabetes Educator is an educated and licensed healthcare professional, often a registered nurse or registered dietitian, who possesses distinct and specialized knowledge in diabetes self-management education. Our CDE's communicate with participant's primary care professionals to ensure that they have the best, most coordinated diabetes health team working for them.
Nonprofit Accountability- Diabetes Management Solutions, also known as "The Diabetes Bus Initiative", and DMS, was incorporated in Oct 2000 and designated as a 501c3 tax exempt nonprofit since April 2001. We have a volunteer board of directors who assure that we are serving our mission and values.
DMS Mission Statement- Providing access to quality education and support to reduce the burden of diabetes in North Carolina
